Company History

Poul’s Landscaping & Nursery, Inc. was founded in 1966 by Paul (Poul) Kjeldbjerg, after he emigrated from Denmark in 1959. The company’s humble beginning included just one full-time employee, a pick-up truck, trailer, and a Ford tractor which is still in use today by Paul when he comes out to plow the Long Grove nursery fields. Paul named the company after the original Danish spelling of his first name, which was later changed when he became a U.S. citizen.

Before starting out on his own, Paul enhanced his skills by working for the one of the area’s original landscape contractors, Otto Damgaard. The business was run from the basement of Paul and Margit’s Prospect Heights, IL home with Margit doing much of the office work while raising their three children, Dan, Annette and Alan. In 1983 Paul invested in 45 acres of land in Long Grove, complete with barn and farm house, with the intention of one day having a nursery and office at that location.

In 1986, Paul’s oldest son, Dan, joined the company after graduating with a BS Degree in Marketing from Northern Illinois University. The first trees were planted that same year and the landscape services office opened its doors at the “farm” in 1992. In 1993, Paul’s youngest son, Alan, joined the company after earning a Horticulture Degree from The Ohio State University, and soon took over the nursery operations. Continuing to grow, Poul’s acquired 112-acres of land in Wadsworth, Illinois in 1999 where it continues to operate wholesale nursery fields.
